Fitness for Active Lifestyles

Picture This…

Your grandchild runs toward you. You scoop them up without a second thought—no hesitation, no wincing, just joy.

That’s what this is about.

Waking up ready for the day. Walking through your neighborhood with confidence. Making your 70s, 80s, and beyond chapters you actually look forward to.

I’m Rusty Warren, and I’ve been exercising regularly since I was 12 years old. Today, 68 years later, I play with my grandchild, hike with my kids, golf with my friends, and still exercise every day. I’m not sharing that to brag. I’m sharing it because I know, firsthand, what consistent movement makes possible.

I built this site to help you get there too—completely free. No gym membership required. No fancy equipment. Just a few minutes of the right movements, done consistently, starting exactly where you are right now.

Let’s make it simple.

You can get all the exercise you need without going to the gym or buying expensive equipment.

We are not trying to run a marathon. We are trying to stay active with friends and family, continue our hobbies and, perhaps most important, live independently.

Just do a few simple exercises in 4 fitness areas to enjoy a full life as you age into your 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.

The 4 exercise categories we focus on include Strength, Endurance, Flexibility and Balance.

These categories have been identified by the National Institute on Aging, among others, as the most important forms of exercise as we get older.

Start easy

Start from where you are.

If you take an occasional walk for about half a mile, then start your exercise routine by walking a bit longer.

Set a goal.  Shoot for a mile or more.

You can also add an occasional short push of walking faster to increase your breathing rate.

If you already have an exercise routine, you can elevate it by setting new goals or expanding your routine to include exercises from all 4 exercises categories.

Make it a habit

This is important.
If you are not naturally inclined to workout, then making exercise a habit is tough.
I will share with you 3 ways that help you make exercise a part of your life.

This is changing lives...

I went through your website and very much like your approach:  honest, open, and grounded, including articles with references!  I’m really glad you included flexibility and balance which I think are really important as we get older.”   Gary C.

Exercises for Functional Fitness

Functional Fitness is the fitness that enables you to perform your normal daily activities. The 4 fitness categories were developed to provide the best all around fitness and health.

Strength

Strength is the ability to lift or move an object of significant weight.  This will be helpful for example if you are a gardener, go grocery shopping, or provide care for others.

Endurance

Endurance is the ability to carry out an activity for an extended period of time without getting tired.  With good endurance you have more energy for work or play activities.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the ability to move through a normal range of motion without pain.  With good flexibility it is easier to play pickle ball, work in the kitchen or the garage or the garden, and perform many other activities.

Balance

Balance is mainly about one thing, avoiding falls.
